HOME AND AWAY

INDIA 2003 SAMINA MISHRA
“Home and Away“ is a multi-layered, multi media work that explores the dynamik of defining one‘s identity. The children in “Home and Away“ are second and third generation British Asians and belong to families that travelled to Britain from across the Indian Subcontinent - India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. An unfamiliar land was filled slowly with the familiar-objects, sounds, smells. And so, for the first generation, it may have been easy to identify themselves as the Indian Diaspora with a comfortable division between a home left behind and a new home, between a nostalgic past and a pragmatic present. But for these children, this is the only home they have ever known - a unique combination of London‘s physical space and the Subcontinent‘s “culture“. They grow up in predominantly Asian neighbourhoods, speak English with an accent that is far from Asian, eat “roti sabzi“ at home and learn hardly any Asian history at school. So, if London is Home, then it is still home to many things that make up their identity.

LA SPECOLA: MEDICAL EXAMINATION & ARCHETYPES OF THE VAGINA DENTATA

USA 2004 CAITLIN BERRIGAN
The inspection of the vagina and the behaviours that sustain it are provocative of our general approach to the body‘s mysterious interiors. Innumerable cultures with a lasting written or oral history make some reference to the archetype of the vagina dentata, or the toothed vagina. The practice of fantasizing teeth in soft, dark places informs the manners and technologies with which medicine approaches the vagina. It is a fantasy in which fear, desire, and repulsion combine. At heart in both myth and medicine is to control and make visible the body‘s mysterious caverns, which are at once seductive, grotesque, pathological, and sacred.

MISTAKES

BULGARIA 2003 SVETLANA MIRCHEVA
“Mistakes” are images generated by my computer while it was trying to open a corrupted jpg file (one of my digital drawings). 10 pixel lines at the top of each ‘mistake’ are left from my authentic drawing. The rest is different every time open the file.
The project “Mistakes“ is a visual investigation of a real software mistake, in which the aim of using the customary graphic software is only the artistic experiment with the technologies and their unpractical application.
It’s a documentation of my attempts to understand the basic structures in an artificial memory, trying to reconstruct a damaged object. Do you think that the ‘mistakes’ are mistakes or reveal of imagination?
