Rubbed The Hard Way

Friday, 21.01., 24:00 h, Saal 1

The Filmwinter’s short film reel at midnight can be seen in the long-standing tradition of US midnight movies: We’re supposed to rub up against all kinds of taboos within the mainstream cinema: All the facets of what is offside and different – phenomena without which the later avant-garde never would have developed. Served in moderate doses these films will make you feel nice and warm!

As the youngest of seven children of a poor family in Hamburg, Wilhelm Roggenthien was brought to an institute in Alsterdorf as a fosterling in 1924. It was an institute accommodating mentally ill and handicapped people. This is where he met Wally H. – who was deported to the Vienna-based death camp „Am Spiegelgrund” together with her daughter – and fell in love with her. Wilhelm escapes from the institute to save his girl-friend. His courageous and stout-hearted actions as well as his persistence lead to Wally being released. But even after returning to Hamburg, there is no peace and quiet for the young couple.

Portugal 2008, HD, Farbe, 4:12 Min.
Regie, Kamera, Schnitt: Patricia Vidal, DarstellerInnen: Catarina Farina, Maya

I entitled this experimental film “Bathroom”, because the bathroom is simultaneously the site of personal grooming and a regular reminder of bodily decay. By defacing still images of a young woman grooming herself, I sought to disrupt the voyeuristic pleasure of the male viewer and pollute the aesthetics of desire with disgust. As for the female viewer, I intended the slow decomposition of the stills to serve as a memento mori. From my personal perspective as a female individual, I cannot consume images of young, beautiful women without thinking of my own body's inevitable self-consumption. In “Bathroom”, I hold up the desirable image only to corrode it and therefore expose the all-too-human desire for eternal youth as an impossible ideal.

Life’s all about two things: firstly, being loved, and secondly not being alone.
